What is Yoga Therapy?
Yoga therapy is an approach devised by B.K.S. Iyengar, using yoga (often with many props) to alleviate a range of illnesses, injuries and conditions. It is effective at working with musculoskeletal problems such as back, neck and knee pain. Many common ailments are related to stress and its impact on the nervous system. Shayna Ogden is an experienced senior Iyengar teacher with specialised skills and knowledge in Yoga Therapy. Shayna has trained with leading Iyengar yoga therapists Stephanie Quirk and Pixie Lillas.
Who is Yoga Therapy for?
Yoga therapy can be of benefit to existing students who have ongoing health issues or problems with various parts of the body. Yoga therapy is also suitable for people with no yoga experience, but who are looking for an alternative approach to an existing condition or injury.
Ballarat Iyengar Yoga’s Approach to Yoga Therapy
Our approach to yoga therapy helps individuals to manage their health issues using the principles of Iyengar yoga to develop an effective practice that appropriately addresses their condition. Rather than a short-term, 1 visit approach, students generally require a minimum of 1 month of weekly yoga therapy sessions to make progress and improve their health status. During the sessions, the teacher will work closely with individual students to design a specific program addressing their concerns. These programs or sequences are developed for each student in the yoga therapy class. The student continues to work with this sequence and may take it with them into general classes when their condition improves. Students are guided and taught in a manner that enables them to understand and gradually develop their own practice. One of the key goals of yoga therapy is to prepare and equip students with the knowledge, skills and confidence to participate in regular classes.
Yoga Therapy Options

2. Yoga Therapy Class, Thursday 4.30 – 5.30 pm
