Iyengar Yoga for every body

Iyengar Yoga for every body

Welcome to Ballarat Yoga

Ballarat Yoga offers daily Iyengar Yoga classes at the old York St milk bar that has been repurposed as a modern, fully equipped yoga studio. We offer a range of classes from beginners to experienced. All teachers are professionally trained and experienced certified Iyengar yoga teachers.

We teach Iyengar yoga in a manner that is authentic, intelligent and inspiring to our students.

We introduce our students to the practice of yoga and safely guide them along the explorative path to experience the transformative effects of yoga.

We embrace inclusivity and provide a safe place for individuals from minority groups. Ballarat Yoga fosters a safe community of yoga practitioners of all ages and levels of experience and ability. As teachers and students, we practice and learn together to experience the life changing effects of Iyengar yoga.

Iyengar Yoga

Iyengar yoga is characterised by precision and alignment in performing the asanas as well as the duration for which they are held. Props may also be used such as blankets, bolsters and belts to facilitate alignment and support in the asanas. Precise alignment of the body helps to correct postural imbalances. Correct alignment brings a sense of freedom and equilibrium. It is this alignment that is refreshing to the body and mind and it leaves us feeling restored after a class. Iyengar yoga is named after BKS Iyengar – the man who investigated classical hatha yoga and applied stringent detail and self-examination to his own practice to discover what asanas can do for the human body, mind and soul. It is his methodology of attention to detail that we teach at BIY.

Iyengar Yoga Certification recognises teachers of Iyengar Yoga who have completed intensive teacher training, have undergone a rigorous assessment process and must undertake continuing education to renew or upgrade their certificate to a higher level. These stringent requirements ensure an internationally recognised standard of excellence in teaching.

BOOKINGS AVAILABLE FOR OUR

Classes & Workshops

Beginners Classes

This is the starting point for students with no prior experience. Classes focus on introducing and consolidating yoga foundations.

Students are guided through a range of standing and seated poses.

General Classes

For people with some Iyengar yoga experience or those who have completed ten weeks or more of Beginners classes. It is designed to develop and extend asana practice. Students continue to consolidate the basics, and are introduced to newer poses such as inversions and backbends. Basic yoga philosophy will be introduced.

Enrolling for 2 classes or more per week is recommended as development depends upon practice based learning.

Experienced Classes

Minimum of 3 years Iyengar Yoga experience necessary. Familiarity and regular practice of inversions and backbends essential. Classes including the full range of yogasanas: standing poses, forward bends & twists, foundation and intermediate backbends, head stand, shoulder stand, restorative poses and pranayama.

If you are attending an Experienced level class, you need to attend at least two classes each week to progress and evolve your practice.

Open Practice & Led Practice Sessions

Open practice time at the studio is an opportunity to engage in your own self-study and practice while having access to the props and rope walls at Ballarat Yoga. Open practice is not a class. Students work on their own practising independently, without the close guidance of a teacher. Whilst a teacher may be on hand, they will not be directing your time at the studio. Led Practice is conducted by a teacher but may not include the detailed guidance and adjustments that you receive in class.

Open practice and Led practice sessions are suitable for current Ballarat Yoga students with at least two years of class experience at a General or Experienced level.

Pranayama

Pranayama is the practice of controlling the breath. It is the fourth limb of the eight disciplines of yoga. It consists of techniques designed to gain mastery over the respiratory process while watching the connection between the breath, the body and the mind. As a practice it evolves from a discipline of watching the breath to a more refined practice where the breath can be applied as an instrument to affect the condition of mind. Pranayama requires a subtle approach based on self-observation.

You will learn preparatory postures and practise basic Pranayama techniques. This class is for General Level students and above. No previous experience of Pranayama is required.

Workshops

In addition to our normal timetable classes, we sometimes run intensive classes, workshops and retreats.

Ballarat Yoga came highly recommended by word of mouth. I've been a casual yoga goer over the years but this is the first studio I will continue to return to for many years. There is so much wisdom and integrated knowledge in the instructors and how the classes are taught. They are very conscientious of working with ailments/ injuries; it is a very safe space to work with your body in whatever stage you may be. A class leaves me balanced, stronger, at ease in my body and feeling whole. If you're looking for a safe, knowledgeable and down to earth studio, this is the one!

I have been attending yoga classes at Ballarat Yoga since 2017. Shayna teaches the whole class with attentive, focused precision, always offering insightful instruction amidst the relaxed, casual, and friendly studio vibe. The classes are so effective, and sometimes challenging, but with Shayna’s support and guidance, I get through the challenges and always leave class feeling revitalized, uplifted, and happy. I value the quality of teaching at Ballarat Yoga so much that I am undertaking yoga teacher training under Shayna’s professional supervision.

I started to practice Yoga at Ballarat IYENGAR Yoga in the middle of 2016 after my traditional Chinese medicine doctor had suggested me to do some stretching activities with acupuncture treatment for my frozen shoulder problem. Even after I moved to Melbourne to work in October 2017, I still went back to Ballarat to practice Yoga during school holidays.I really thanked for Ballarat IYENGAR Yoga had offered online Yoga practice which enabled me to continue practice Yoga without stopping this practice during lockdown time. I really like Ballarat Yoga as all Yoga teachers are very friendly and professional. Shayna, Cara and Ansha, Glen are all patient and caring, they especial pay attention to my weakness and correct my wrong gesture. Practice of Yoga has become part of my life.
